What sparked it

Breakthrough is about wanting to get away from where I am. It’s the feeling of wanting to run to someplace more accepting of who I am. The verses are the daily routine, the same thing every time. The chorus is me looking for the way out.

The line that matters most

“Gonna leave this place behind.”

That’s what I want to do, so it’s the line I mean the most. By the last chorus, it changes from looking for my breakthrough to finding it.

Singing it now

It still feels the same as when I wrote it, because I’m still in the place I want to get away from.
